MFA Pre-Thesis - theoretical project
Design Concept: "A story about intimacy and the terrible struggle to be seen, to be known, to know yourself" (Jen Silverman, playwright). A look at the human need for visibility, how women are seen (or not), and the space they are permitted to take up. Being visible is more than simply being "in view" - it is to be seen with clarity, and to be understood fully.
My design embraces the fog of the Yorkshire Moors for a surrealist take on the 1840s and the mysterious Bronte sisters. I explore the concept of visibility through use of transparent materials - fog, scrim, and sheer fabrics.
